Since Dungeons & Dragons was first released in 1974, there have been hundreds of fantasy roleplaying games, each of them presenting their own setting. Often, these worlds owe a lot to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, at other times, they have been entirely unique. Game systems have evolved as well and even though D&D is still around, most tabletop RPGs now focus on the story element and acting at least just as much as killing monsters and finding treasure… Era: Lyres, however, takes the roleplaying experience to places it hasn’t gone before: in Lyres, players take on characters whose group is spinning tales in a tavern, trying to make their listeners believe their incredible stories. If that sounds like meta roleplaying – well, we guess that’s because it is!

In May last year, the Era: Lyres Kickstarter was successfully funded, bringing in more than twice the required backing. Today, Shades of Vengeance has launched another Kickstarter, this time bringing the Era: Lyres – Pocket Edition to gamers, a stripped-down, but fully playable version of the core rulebook. After only a few hours, the project was already funded and it seems like the first stretch goals will be met soon.

Suitable to be used as a stand-alone rulebook or as a reference book for gamers who already own the full Deluxe Edition, Era: Lyres – Pocket Edition allows Game Masters and players to enjoy any kind of fantasy adventure they would be able to have in other games. The twist is: they’re really playing characters who are boasting about their adventures in a tavern, in front of a boisterous – and possibly quite drunk – crowd. Success doesn’t only depend on their physical abilities and intellect, but also on how well they convey the story to their listeners, ending in anything from applause to a bar fight.

Era: Lyres lends itself very well to one-shot adventures, the stories can easily form a long-term campaign, allowing gaming groups to weave any kind of story together they can imagine. It’s just great fantasy gaming, folks – with a twist.
